An end to loan sharking...

I have this idea, need some inspiration or help (actually just need to do a hell of a lot of research first but throwing things out there never hurts). I drove past one of those cash loan places the other day - you know, the ones where some poor family gets disconnected from their electricity bill, and goes and gets a loan of $150 so that they can pay it and end up having to pay back $250 to the loan place - and it made me think that there is something I can do about it.

Many of the projects we support in developing countries started with a goal (one of many) of helping the people be less dependent on the loan sharks who prey on them, and there are various methods of doing it - women in savings groups, microcredit etc. - depending on the community and social structure i.e. lending only to the women who always pay it back (this is what the Grameen bank found and numerous organisations followed suit). And the thing is - why can't we apply that at home? So...why not, aye?

More to come...
